Ethel King was the winner of the 2012 Good Neighbour of the Year award in the Southwark Stars award, organised by Volunteer Centre Southwark
Ethel is is incredibly popular long-time resident of Lawson Estate.
She is well known in her community because of her individual acts of kindness. Although she is in her 80’s she has a network of people whose health is not so good that she supports, as well as always joining in the fun for young people.
She has been an active member of Lawson Tenants & Residents Association for so long no one can remember when she first joined. She is a long standing member and deacon of the congregation of St. Matthews Church and is an enthusiastic member of the church’s visiting rota for the elderly and those in hospital or anyone who needs a hand in their home including bathing people, taking in their washing and ironing and providing a hot meal when required.
On top of all this, after her retirement from paid employment she continues to do a few hours secretarial work at St. Saviours and St Olave’s School every week on a voluntary basis. She is above all good neighbour to all the residents who live in her block always on hand to provide a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
Ethel’s award was presented by Simon Hughes MP.
