Beware of theives targeting JMB estates
7 September 2009
Thieves are targeting residents on the JMB estates by pretending to be official workers. They are trying to get people to let them in to their homes and then take money and valuables while the residents is not aware of what is going on.
The JMB is aware of two recent incidents on the Lawson Estate where thieves have attempted burglaries. Residents should be very careful if anybody comes to their door asking to come in to their house.
JMB Manager Andy Bates said:
“Before you let anybody in to your home, make sure you are happy that they need to be there.
“Anybody working for the JMB or other official bodies, such as gas or electricity workers, will carry an identification card, even in an emergency. If they say they do not have their identification with them then they are probably attempting to trick you.
“If you are unsure whether somebody should be there, do not let them in. Close your front door and contact the JMB office by ringing 020 7450 8000, any time of day or night. We will confirm whether they should be there. Do not trust them to call on your behalf.”
If you see anybody acting suspiciously, then contact the police by dialling 999 on your telephone.
